On the auspicious occasion of Navratri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, not merely with festive greetings, but with a message signaling a new chapter in India’s economic journey. With the launch of the Next Generation GST reforms, India steps forward in its pursuit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, bringing relief, simplicity, and opportunity to millions of citizens.
The GST Bachat Utsav, or Savings Festival, inaugurated alongside the reforms, is more than a symbolic celebration. By streamlining tax slabs primarily to 5% and 18%, the reforms aim to make essential goods and services—ranging from food and medicines to personal care and insurance—more affordable. This step, the Prime Minister emphasized, benefits not just the middle class but also farmers, youth, women, traders, and small business owners, promising tangible savings across the socio-economic spectrum.
Reflecting on India’s tax history, Shri Modi recalled the cumbersome maze of Octroi, Entry Tax, VAT, Excise, and Sales Tax that burdened businesses and citizens alike. Transporting goods across cities often involved multiple checkpoints, forms, and conflicting regulations—a complexity that translated into higher costs for the common consumer. The introduction of GST in 2017 marked the first stride toward simplification, but today’s reforms represent the next evolutionary step, responding to the nation’s current and future aspirations.
Crucially, the Prime Minister highlighted the transformative potential of these reforms for India’s MSMEs and small-scale industries. Reduced GST rates and simplified procedures will not only lower their tax burden but also boost domestic production, sales, and employment. By fostering high-quality manufacturing, these reforms aim to revive India’s global manufacturing reputation and reinforce the Swadeshi ethos. As Shri Modi urged, every citizen and enterprise should internalize the mantra of “I buy Swadeshi, I sell Swadeshi,” embedding national pride and self-reliance into daily choices.
The combined impact of income tax relief and GST reductions, estimated to exceed ₹2.5 lakh crore, underlines the government’s commitment to economic empowerment and inclusive growth. Beyond mere numbers, these reforms embody a vision of a nation where development reaches every household, every trader, and every state.
As India celebrates Navratri, it is fitting that this festival of strength coincides with an economic initiative designed to empower the people. The Next Generation GST reforms are not just a policy milestone—they are a clarion call for a self-reliant, prosperous, and united India.
