As digital platforms increasingly reward absurdity and exploitation, our society faces an internal crisis of character. From the mockery of the vulnerable to the erosion of privacy for “clout,” this piece examines how we are trading our long-held moral values for fleeting digital engagement and why the youth are paying the highest price.

A civilized and educated society is defined by a collective commitment to moral integrity and the active rejection of social evils. History consistently demonstrates that when a community allows its ethical foundations to erode, it invites a slow but certain internal collapse. We live in an era where the marvels of science and technology have revolutionized every facet of human existence, offering comfort and connectivity once thought impossible. Yet, these advancements are double-edged. When harnessed for progress, they open new vistas of prosperity; when misused, they transform into a social curse that fosters decay.
The British historian Arnold J. Toynbee famously noted in his monumental study of human civilizations that societies die by suicide rather than murder. This self-inflicted decline often begins with the perversion of modesty and morality. In modern contexts, this decay is frequently masked by changed nomenclatures where vice is rebranded as custom and those who propagate indecency are hailed as role models. Such a society remains inebriated by its own transgressions, oblivious to the fact that its downward trajectory is accelerating.
The youth are the primary engine of development and the most precious asset of any nation. However, when the younger generation is systematically lured into immoral and immodest activities, the fate of that society is sealed. In our contemporary world, social media has emerged as the most influential force in shaping the psyche of the youth. During the global pandemic, we witnessed its immense utility as a tool for education, governance, and business. Across the globe, it continues to serve as a platform for disseminating knowledge, mastering new crafts, and maintaining a pulse on global affairs.
Unfortunately, a disturbing trend has emerged within our own local digital landscape. Instead of utilizing these platforms for growth, a segment of social media influencers has turned them into vehicles for vulgarity and the exploitation of the vulnerable. Under the guise of roasting, these creators publicly mock the physical and mental imperfections of others. This practice is not merely a lapse in judgment; it is a calculated assault on the dignity of individuals and a violation of both moral and religious prohibitions. By feeding the youth a steady diet of absurdity and insanity, these influencers are effectively murdering the virtues that hold a community together.

Perhaps the most tragic aspect of this digital culture is the systemic mistreatment of the mentally unsound. It has become common practice to record and upload videos of those who lack the capacity to defend themselves, using their confusion as a source of cheap entertainment. When these vulnerable individuals are provoked to the point of breakdown—sometimes resulting in outbursts that offend religious or social sentiments—the public is quick to condemn them. Yet the true culprits are the supposedly educated individuals who manipulate them for views and engagement. To invite mentally challenged people as special guests just to film their confusion is an act of profound cruelty. Those who lack the intellect to distinguish between right and wrong are victims; those who possess the intellect but choose to exploit the innocent fall below the standard of humanity.
The phenomenon of vlogging has also taken a turn toward the voyeuristic. Many creators now trade their family secrets and private daily lives for digital clout, wasting the precious time of millions of viewers who are diverted from their own life goals. This culture of oversharing and mocking personal privacy sends a damaging message to the next generation about the value of discretion and self-respect.
However, the responsibility for this digital toxicity does not rest solely on the shoulders of the content creators. Every individual who watches, likes, or shares these videos is an accomplice in the spread of immodesty. By providing an audience for indecency, the public incentivizes its production. If we collectively refused to engage with or advertise such content, the cycle of exploitation would cease overnight. We must recognize that our digital footprints are not just data points but reflections of our character. In a spiritual and moral sense, every action taken behind a screen is recorded and subject to eventual accountability.
It is our collective duty to act as guardians of our social fabric. This requires a proactive approach to reporting harmful content and a conscious decision to promote information that enriches rather than degrades. We must reclaim social media as a tool for enlightenment and progress. A society that honors the exploited and values substance over absurdity is a society that can withstand the test of time. Let us ensure that our digital legacy is one of virtue and empathy, rather than one that humiliates us before the judgment of history and the eyes of the Creator.
