Solar Surge in J&K

By Ajaz Rashid

In a groundbreaking development, the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) has witnessed an unprecedented response to its Rooftop Solar Scheme within the Union Territory. The initiative, aimed at promoting clean and renewable energy, has already seen the installation of approximately 5 to 6 MegaWatt (MW) capacity on residential buildings, showcasing a remarkable enthusiasm among the residents.

Officials have lauded the swift implementation of the Rooftop Solar Scheme, emphasizing its significance in comparison to the traditionally time-consuming and capital-intensive hydropower projects. The ambitious 20-Megawatt ‘Roof Top Solar Power Plant’ project for Jammu and Kashmir, initiated by the agency, is already making strides, with 5 to 6MW already operational and the goal of covering 10,000 households under this scheme.

Solar Surge in J&K

Part of the National Solar Mission, the Rooftop Solar Scheme offers participants a dual advantage. With a 65% subsidy (40% from the Government of India and 25% from the Government of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir), residents can experience a substantial reduction in their energy bills. The scheme’s efficiency is reflected not only in its cost-effectiveness but also in its swift installation process facilitated by empanelled firms working in tandem with the Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited.

Officials stress the multitude of advantages that the Rooftop Solar System brings to consumers. Beyond addressing immediate concerns about power cuts, it serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional electric supply. The added benefit of minimal maintenance costs and a lifespan of up to 25 years further underscores the appeal of this sustainable energy solution.

To bolster the broader adoption of clean energy, J&K Bank, in collaboration with JAKEDA, is offering a finance facility for individuals keen on purchasing and installing rooftop solar systems. The finance scheme is inclusive, catering to individuals with a consistent income across various sectors, including government employees, professionals, self-employed individuals, businessmen, retirees, and those engaged in agricultural and allied activities.

As Jammu and Kashmir endeavors to achieve self-sufficiency in power generation, the Rooftop Solar Scheme emerges as a pivotal stride in harnessing clean energy and diminishing the carbon footprint in the region. The overwhelming response from residents not only reflects a growing environmental consciousness but also signals a significant shift towards sustainable practices that will undoubtedly shape the future of energy consumption in the Union Territory.
