How Jammu and Kashmir Conquered the Ranji Trophy and Rewrote Sporting History

The afternoon sun baked the red soil of the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium in Hubballi as the final moments of India’s premier domestic cricket competition ticked away. For eight-time champions Karnataka, the fifth and final day was a grueling exercise in inevitability. For the cricket team of Jammu and Kashmir, it was the glorious culmination of a dream that began exactly sixty-seven years ago. When the umpires finally called time on the match, the scorecard reflected a drawn game. The rules of the tournament dictated that the team with the first-innings lead would be crowned champions. That team was Jammu and Kashmir. They had not just secured a narrow lead. They had orchestrated an absolute masterclass in first-class cricket to claim their maiden Ranji Trophy title and end a staggering 66-year wait for domestic glory.

This victory marks a watershed achievement for the region. It is a triumph that transcends the boundary ropes and ignites widespread celebrations across the entire Union Territory. Fans and observers alike hail this victory as a powerful symbol of perseverance and a testament to the profound transformation of the local sporting culture. The journey from perpetual underdogs to undisputed champions is a narrative of grit that will inspire generations to come.

The Foundation of a Masterpiece

The road to the championship was paved with early setbacks and remarkable resilience. The campaign began on a rocky note with a demoralizing defeat against the Mumbai cricket team. In years past, such an early blow might have completely derailed their season. This year was demonstrably different. Under the astute guidance of coach Ajay Sharma, the squad transformed from a group of talented but inconsistent individuals into a hardened and disciplined red-ball unit. Sharma utilized his vast experience to reshape the team’s fundamental approach to the longer format of the game. They regrouped quickly to secure a dominant victory over Rajasthan. This crucial win reignited their campaign and instilled a newfound belief within the dressing room. They maintained relentless consistency through the league stages to ensure qualification for the knockouts. They subsequently outclassed the Madhya Pradesh cricket team in the quarterfinal and dismantled a formidable Bengal side in the semifinal to book their ticket to Hubballi.

Winning the toss in a high-pressure final is an absolute necessity. Captain Paras Dogra called the coin toss correctly and without hesitation opted to bat first. This calculated decision laid the concrete foundation for a truly memorable triumph. The strategy was abundantly clear from the very first ball. The visitors wanted to bat the opposition entirely out of the contest. The execution of this strategy was nothing short of flawless.

The Jammu and Kashmir batting lineup piled up a monumental 584 runs over 173.1 grueling overs. They rode on a highly disciplined and collective batting display that tested the physical and mental endurance of the host team. Shubham Pundir anchored this mammoth effort with a masterful 121 runs. He built his innings with immense patience and supreme technical precision. Yawer Hassan contributed a remarkably solid 88 runs at the top of the order. Dogra led by personal example and added 70 crucial runs to ensure absolute stability.

The middle and lower order refused to yield any ground to the tired bowlers. Abdul Samad scored a brisk and valuable 61 runs. Kanhaiya Wadhawan added another 70 runs to the soaring total. Sahil Lotra pushed the scoreboard further into the stratosphere with a brilliant 72. The home side possessed an international-caliber bowler in Prasidh Krishna. Krishna bowled his heart out to claim an exceptional five-wicket haul. Despite his heroic individual efforts, the Karnataka bowling attack fundamentally struggled to contain the relentless and methodical Jammu and Kashmir batting unit.

The Collapse and the Conquest

Facing a mountainous total of 584 runs in a championship final is a uniquely daunting psychological challenge. Karnataka eventually faltered under the mounting pressure and were bundled out for a mere 293 runs. This dramatic collapse conceded a massive 291-run deficit in the first innings. Veteran batter Mayank Agarwal stood incredibly tall amidst the ruins and waged a magnificent lone battle with a fighting 160. He unfortunately lacked any meaningful support from the other end as the visiting bowlers completely dominated the proceedings.

Leading the ferocious bowling charge was Auqib Nabi Dar. The lethal pacer produced a sensational spell of fast bowling to claim five wickets for just 54 runs. This incredible performance marked his seventh five-wicket haul of the season. His sheer pace and accuracy firmly tilted the contest in his team’s favor. Sunil Kumar and Yudhvir Singh Charak provided relentless support from the other end and ensured the illustrious hosts never found an avenue for recovery.

Armed with a commanding lead, the visiting team tightened their iron grip in the second innings until all hope was permanently extinguished for the home side. Opener Qamran Iqbal commanded the crease to score a stellar unbeaten 160. This monumental effort marked his second century in first-class cricket. Sahil Lotra capped off an absolute dream match by registering his fluent maiden first-class century. Lotra finished the game unbeaten on 101. Their unbroken and punishing partnership guided the team to 342 for the loss of four wickets. They extended their overall advantage to an insurmountable 633 runs by the time the match officially concluded.

Voices of the Champions

The architects of this historic transformation were visibly overwhelmed by the magnitude of their achievement. Captain Paras Dogra described the victory as the absolute biggest moment of his entire career. He credited the unwavering unity of the squad and the vital lessons learned from the narrow heartbreaks of the previous season.

“Every run mattered this season, and we made sure not to repeat past mistakes,” he said.

Player of the Series Auqib Nabi Dar termed the ultimate triumph “unbelievable,” highlighting the many years of profound struggle and dedicated hard work. He strongly emphasized the critical importance of trusting the daily process over obsessing about final results. He ultimately dedicated the monumental win to the loving people of his home region.

Player of the Match Shubham Pundir called the collective achievement “surreal,” stating that the team’s primary focus was always heavily centered on batting long periods and building substantial partnerships rather than mindlessly chasing individual numbers.

The opposition displayed immense grace in defeat. Karnataka captain Devdutt Padikkal sportingly acknowledged the sheer superiority of the victorious side. He openly praised their remarkable consistency over the five days and honestly admitted his highly decorated side simply fell short under the immense championship pressure.

A Nation Applauds

The historic nature of this championship victory resonated loudly through the highest corridors of power across the nation. The highest political offices and the most legendary sporting figures immediately recognized the profound socio-cultural impact of this sporting milestone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to broadcast his immense pride. He wrote on X: “Congratulations to the Jammu and Kashmir team for their first ever Ranji Trophy win! This historic triumph reflects remarkable grit, discipline and passion of the team. It is a proud moment for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and it highlights the growing sporting passion and talent there. May this feat inspire many young athletes to dream big and play more.”

Our sport is rich with such stories of inspiration from around the world and I hope this one also receives its fair share of admiration.”

BCCI Secretary Devajit LON Saikia added his voice to the chorus of appreciation. He stated: “Heartiest Congratulations to J&K Cricket Team for winning its maiden Ranji Trophy at Hubli today…it is a classic instance of how well the game of cricket is spread across India despite challenging conditions. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar offered a beautifully poetic tribute to the victorious squad. He specifically singled out the phenomenal bowling efforts of Auqib Nabi. The season was built on consistency, resilience, and season-long excellence. Auqib Nabi’s impact with the ball stood out in a demanding campaign. A historic moment for the team, coaches, and support staff. Journeys like these define the beauty of domestic cricket,”

Local Joy

The victory struck an incredibly deep emotional chord within the local political landscape. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah traveled personally to the stadium in Hubballi to witness the historic occasion. He immediately met the victorious players after the match and congratulated them on the field. He was accompanied by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, and Members of the JKCA. The Chief Minister applauded Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra for their remarkable centuries and highly commended Auqib Nabi for his match-winning spells.

To honor this unprecedented achievement, Chief Minister Abdullah announced a massive 2 crore cash reward for the players and the support staff. He further declared that the members of the title-winning squad would be officially eligible for direct government appointments under the newly notified administrative policy for outstanding regional athletes.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh celebrated the momentous departure from historical sporting struggles. He posted: “You made it boys! You’ve made history! Heartiest congratulations to the #JammuAndKashmir cricket team for this remarkable Ranji Trophy victory. You have not only made everyone proud but also vindicated the trust reposed in you by your selectors and vindicated also the departure from the past considerations that determined the earlier selections,”

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti viewed the triumph through a powerful sociological lens. She described the victory as a rare moment of profound joy and a potent symbol of deep communal harmony. She wrote: “Today’s stupendous success of the Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy has given the people a rare moment of joy after a long time. This victory is also a powerful reply to those forces that seek to divide our society on religious lines. The triumph was made possible by the united effort of a team made up of both Hindu and Muslim players proving once again that unity is our greatest strength. Together we rise, together we succeed, and today’s win is a reminder to the world that the spirit of J&K can never be broken.”

Political leaders across the entire ideological spectrum united in celebration. Sajad Lone called it the end of a very long wait. He posted: “Jammu and Kashmir finally are the champions of cricket in the country. Congratulations to the team. Congratulations to the team management. And congratulations to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. What a long wait it has been.”

Altaf Bukhari shared similar warm sentiments. He wrote: “Heartfelt greetings to Team J&K for winning their first-ever Ranji Trophy title. This remarkable triumph marks a historic milestone not only for the team but for the entire people of the Union Territory. This is truly a moment of celebration and pride, representing a historic achievement. I congratulate each and every member of the team, as well as everyone who played a role in this tremendous victory. Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma added his voice to the massive celebration. He wrote: “Heartiest Congratulations to our Jammu & Kashmir team on winning the Ranji Trophy Final. Our team has made the entire Jammu Kashmir proud with their hard work and determination. The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry hailed the incredible triumph and strongly urged the local authorities to immediately upgrade key sporting venues like the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium, Polo Ground, and Bakshi Stadium to nurture emerging young talent. Hakeem Yaseen of the People’s Democratic Front issued a formal statement calling the victory a landmark moment that will definitively inspire countless young cricketers.

Grassroots Dreams

The elite victory in Hubballi perfectly coincided with a major grassroots initiative back home. While the Ranji heroes lifted the magnificent trophy, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed the inaugural ceremony of the second edition of the Sikh Cricket Premier League in Jammu. The event was heavily attended by Ajit Singh of the All J&K Sikh Coordination Committee, MLA Vikram Randhawa, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, IGP Bhim Sen Tuti, and ACB Director Shakti Pathak.

The Lieutenant Governor used the highly auspicious occasion to passionately remind the massive crowd that the regional youth represent the absolute solution to every modern challenge.

“The new generation embodies possibility itself. I believe our youth are the solution to every challenge. Provide them apt opportunities, robust platforms, and true mentorship, and they will author history,” he stated.

He highly praised the tournament for actively fostering deep social inclusivity by mandating that each participating team proudly include youth from various other communities. He spoke directly to the young players about training with ferocious daily discipline and competing with unbreakable team unity on and off the sporting ground.

“The energy of our youth is like a river. When guided with purpose, it becomes a source of life and progress. I am confident in the journey of nation-building, our youth will not stop, not bow, and they will not tire,” the Lieutenant Governor proclaimed.

To guarantee that this historic Ranji Trophy victory becomes a permanent foundation rather than an isolated miracle, the Lieutenant Governor officially confirmed a massive influx of developmental funding. He stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has formally assured an enormous 200 crore financial assistance package dedicated entirely to regional sports development. This unprecedented funding will be strictly managed with the active support of the BCCI, FIFA, and various other major sports organizations.

The story of the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team is no longer a simple tale of geographical participation. It is now a documented history of ultimate championship domination. The sixty-six years of waiting are officially over. The future of regional cricket has finally arrived. (With inputs from KNO)
