The third round of immunization under the Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 5.0 recently kicked off in the picturesque region of Jammu & Kashmir, running from the 9th to the 14th of this month. IMI 5.0, a crucial vaccination program, is designed to reach children who have remained unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, thus addressing a longstanding public health concern. This initiative aims to leave no child behind, ensuring that every child and pregnant woman receives the protection of essential vaccines. “IMI 5.0 will focus on reaching zero-dose children aged between 0-5 years, ensuring that every child receives life-saving vaccines,” emphasized the program’s leadership.
A key element supporting this ambitious immunization campaign is the U-Win platform, which facilitates the effective tracking of beneficiaries, including children aged 0-5 and pregnant women. The comprehensive training provided at the divisional, district, and block levels in both Kashmir and Jammu has prepared healthcare workers to maximize the utility of the U-Win platform, an integral part of India’s Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
The program is executed in three distinct phases, each with a specific timeframe. The first phase took place from August 7 to 12, followed by Phase 2 from September 11 to 16, and the current Phase 3, which runs from October 9 to 14. This phased approach allows for efficient planning and implementation, minimizing the risk of leaving any child or pregnant woman unvaccinated.
The program’s scope encompasses children aged 0-2 years (0-23 months) who may have missed age-appropriate vaccinations or deviated from the vaccination schedule. It also extends to all children between 2-5 years who have not received the essential Measles-Rubella (MR) 1 and MR 2 vaccinations, in addition to booster doses for DPT and OPV.
To bolster routine immunization planning and delivery mechanisms, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, introduced the “Mission Indradhanush” flagship program in December 2014. The ultimate goal was to surpass a 90% full immunization coverage rate nationwide, safeguarding the health and well-being of the country’s youngest citizens.
As the third phase of IMI 5.0 unfolds in Jammu & Kashmir, we must appreciate the dedication and commitment of healthcare workers, officials, and the broader community in their efforts to protect the vulnerable. The initiative not only promises better health outcomes for the region but is also a testament to India’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the health of its future generations. It is a vital step towards ensuring that no child is left without the life-saving protection vaccines provide.
