Jammu, Aug 9: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has reiterated the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest, despite the challenges posed by the security situation in the region. Speaking at a press conference in Jammu today, Kumar assured that all necessary measures will be in place to ensure peaceful and incident-free polls.
“We are committed to conducting elections at the earliest and believe we will give a befitting reply to those who want to derail the election process,” said Kumar. He highlighted the overwhelming participation of the people in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections as a clear indication of their democratic aspirations.
He also assured that rallies and public gatherings will be permitted through an online process to maintain transparency and fairness. “All District Commissioners (DCs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been clearly instructed to be impartial and unbiased in their management of rallies. Any deviation from this will be addressed sternly,” he added.
The CEC also addressed the issue of drug misuse in the region, calling it a major concern that threatens the future of the younger generation. “We are going to be extremely serious regarding this issue, and I am being told action has already begun in this regard,” Kumar added.
On the topic of security, Kumar acknowledged that the situation remains a challenge but assured that no leniency would be permitted. “All the agencies informed us that they are ready for polls even though challenges are there. Security is an issue, but no lenience will be done that may derail the process,” he said.
Kumar also mentioned that a separate review of the security situation would be conducted after the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra, which is currently underway. “We will take a review once again after we go back to Delhi and decide accordingly about the polls,” he explained.
In response to concerns about potential terror attacks affecting the elections, Kumar expressed confidence in the capabilities of the security forces and administration. “We will not let any such activity disrupt the election process. Our forces and entire administration are capable enough to deal with any situation that comes in the way,” he said.
