Kashmir’s Horticulture Gets a Lifeline

By AJaz Rashid

Kashmir’s Horticulture Gets a Lifeline: The launch of the daily parcel train service connecting Kashmir with New Delhi marks a significant milestone in the region’s economic development and infrastructural modernization. Flagged off recently from Nowgam Railway Station, this initiative promises to transform the way perishable horticulture produce, particularly apples and walnuts, reach the national capital. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha rightly described the service as a “major boost to the economy,” acknowledging its potential to alleviate the longstanding challenges faced by fruit growers.

For decades, the horticulture sector in Kashmir has been vulnerable to the vagaries of weather and topography. Seasonal snowfall, landslides, and frequent closures of the National Highway have disrupted the supply chain, causing substantial losses to farmers and traders. Every day of delay could mean millions of rupees lost due to spoilage, with far-reaching effects on livelihoods and local markets. The introduction of a dedicated railway parcel service directly addresses these challenges, offering a reliable, weather-resilient alternative to road transport.

The operational details underscore the seriousness of this effort. The train, running between Budgam and Adarsh Nagar in Delhi with a scheduled stop at Bari Brahmana in Jammu, comprises eight parcel coaches, each with a 23-ton capacity. The inaugural train, carrying fruit valued at ₹2.5 crore, reached Delhi within 24 hours—a testament to the efficiency and timeliness the service promises. With a similar 15-coach train soon to operate from Anantnag, the initiative is poised to expand, ensuring more farmers benefit and reducing transit losses significantly.

Beyond immediate economic relief, the service reflects a broader vision of integration and development. It highlights how targeted infrastructural interventions can catalyze growth, strengthen market linkages, and instill confidence among producers. Efficient logistics not only stabilize local markets but also create opportunities for scaling exports and diversifying the region’s economic base. Moreover, this development underscores the role of Indian Railways as a facilitator of regional progress, bridging geographic challenges and enabling sustainable economic activity.

In essence, the parcel train service is more than a logistical innovation—it is a developmental leap for Kashmir’s horticulture sector and a tangible example of governance focused on economic empowerment. By reducing dependency on vulnerable road networks and ensuring timely delivery of perishable goods, the initiative strengthens livelihoods, encourages investment, and sets the stage for a more resilient and prosperous regional economy.
