Kashmir’s Alpine Ambassador

Kashmir’s Alpine Ambassador

By Ajaz Rashid

In the serene valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, the rugged mountains have found a young ambassador in Aabid Ahmad Thoker, a 23-year-old biochemistry student and avid trekker. Known to his growing social media following as Alfaaz Aabid, he hails from Narapora Shopian, a quaint village that has shaped both his love for nature and his determination to showcase Kashmir’s alpine wonders to the world.

Balancing the rigors of an Integrated PG in Biochemistry at the University of Kashmir with a passion for trekking, Aabid has embarked on a mission to explore every alpine lake and meadow in the region. His Instagram page, alpinetrekker_, has become more than a digital diary; it is a vibrant window into the untouched splendor of Kashmir. Each post, whether a photograph of mist-laden peaks or a video of glacial streams, invites followers to experience the raw beauty of the mountains, bridging geographical boundaries and drawing tourists from across states and countries.

Aabid’s journey into trekking began at 18 when he joined a local trekking club. What started as simple excursions to nearby destinations like Yusmarg, Peer Ki Gali, Kongwattan, Pahalgam, Doodhpathri, and Aharbal gradually evolved into high-altitude adventures across more challenging terrains. Armed with nothing more than a mobile phone, he began documenting these expeditions, combining his love for photography with a desire to narrate the stories of Kashmir’s landscapes.

“The roots of my passion for photography and videography trace back to my formative years,” Aabid reflects. “Balancing academics and exploration has always been important to me. My dedication to studies helped me secure excellent results in my 12th standard examinations, paving the way for my admission to the University of Kashmir, where I further pursued biochemistry.”

What sets Aabid apart is his unwavering commitment to adventure tourism without commercial incentives. His treks are personal odysseys, often shared with a close circle of friends from Srinagar, rather than organized tours. Despite limited institutional support, his determination to promote Kashmir’s natural heritage has remained steadfast. Each trek, each photograph, each story shared online is part of a larger mission: to highlight the valley’s pristine landscapes and cultural richness, and to encourage responsible tourism that celebrates the environment rather than exploits it.

Kashmir’s Alpine Ambassador

A watershed moment in Aabid’s journey came in July 2023, when his tireless efforts were recognized by the India Book of Records. This accolade celebrated his unique contribution to promoting Kashmir tourism via social media, earning him both a certificate and a medal. “It was a moment of validation,” he says, “but it also reinforced my responsibility to continue showcasing the positive, enchanting facets of Kashmir to a global audience.”

Through his Instagram posts, Aabid intertwines visual storytelling with educational insights. Captions often provide glimpses into the region’s history, vibrant culture, diverse flora, and fauna, offering followers a holistic understanding of the landscapes he explores. For him, adventure and awareness go hand in hand: by sharing the valley’s beauty, he hopes to inspire environmental appreciation alongside tourism.

Looking ahead, Aabid envisions a journey that transcends Kashmir. His aspirations include exploring alpine regions in other states, learning new skills and languages, and immersing himself in diverse cultures. His vision of boundless exploration is coupled with a mission to create cultural bridges, ensuring that every trek and every story contributes not just to his personal growth, but also to a greater understanding of the world.

As Aabid Ahmad Thoker continues to carve paths through the high-altitude lakes and meadows of Kashmir, his message resonates clearly: the mountains are waiting, and the trails he charts are open to anyone willing to embrace adventure, curiosity, and the sheer thrill of discovery. Through his lens and footsteps, Kashmir’s alpine beauty finds a youthful, vibrant voice that promises to echo far beyond the valley.
